P-51 Mustangas on Iwo Jima

Here are some absolutely amazing photos of P-51 Mustangs and Superforts that flew from Iwo Jima late in the war. The Mustangs were the first fighter planes to escort B-29 Superforts over Tokyo on bombing runs. Most of these photos were shot in mid-1945. There’s even a photo of General Doolittle discussing a bombing run over Tokyo. Hard to imagine that the young fighter pilots shown in these photos are now in their ’80s if still alive.

Back then we could probably build several Superforts for what the electronics in a F-18 SuperHornet cost today.
