A WW II Fighter Commercial You Won’t See Ever Again
Life in the good, old US of A were a lot different during World War II and so were the commercials. I remember radio commercials where doctors were telling us that it was good to smoke – if you can imagine that. However, there were some great radio programs that captured my time and imagination. Radio was different in that it was “theater of the mind,” That is you had to listen and then imagine what you were supposed to be seeing. Some of my personal favorites were The Shadow, Fighting AAF, and March of Time.
But I digress.
Back in the 1940s, just about everyone I knew smoked – both my parents, my aunts and uncles – the USO or somebody even gave free cigarettes to our soldiers, sailors and airmen and women.
While this spot is dated as South China Sea, 1944, I am skeptical that it is truly authentic. I’m sure we didn’t have TV commercials in 1944 and if there were any, they wouldn’t have been in color. So, when was this produced? I guess we’ll never know but it does at least portray what a 1940s TV spot could have looked like.
